Jim Noir My Evaluation

We were only informed on working on another band session last minute; this gave us very little time to do much research. Never the less I attempted by reading up about them and watching some of their live performances on YouTube. It was difficult to find much research on Jim Noir so most of my work came from analyzing his performances. Whilst watching I noted down key elements of his songs, positions, tempo, solo moments and length of each song. From my research I learnt that;

“Jim Noir is a talented English singer/songwriter who varies himself by being a multi-instrumental musician specializing in psychedelic pop electronic music. Having success around England and America by having multiple albums, tours and labels.'”.                                 (From my research document)

A handful of students, including myself were chosen to work in the studio last minute to work along with the newest members of our group, we were their mainly to help and instruct them.  We were informed that we basically had total control of everything, which was nerving considering we hadn’t had full control before however I believe it is what we needed to get us right back into media production. We didn’t have any trouble assigning roles for everyone as we have had previous experience of each aspect within the studio; we thought it would be best to get the students on the cameras. We then taught them the basics such as locking the camera, checking focus and knowing which camera is which. We each took some time to show the new people certain shots they will be expected to perform but  as they are new they wouldn’t be doing anything complicated so we just demonstrated how to deliver medium close up’s and establishing shots. We advised that each of them should practice slow zoom in and out considering it has a great effect if done well and it is simple to do.
Once we allowed the new students to have a bit of practice with the cameras, each of the students with studio experience and I began discussing on how to position the lighting and what filters would be used. I used some of my research as a guide but we still struggled seeing as in previous band sessions the lighting was left to a tutor, so we asked him to explain how to set up and use the lighting well enough for our band session. After listening to what he had to say I realized I need to educate myself more on lighting in the studio, so I plan to do some private research of lighting in more depth.  I have been informed that in one of our pathways works more with lighting; hopefully this will educate me more and benefit me for my future projects.
We had to wait for the band to set but it didn’t take long and we were able to start production really quick, this band session was mainly for the new students to get some hands on experience but we didn’t want to overwhelm them on their first attempt .The positioning of the cameras were simple for them but to ensure we had some good footage another student took the role of camera 1 and was able to get close up’s of the guitar and other range of shots. As I was instructing the new people to learn the camera basics I remained in the gallery during production and took role of “tape man”, which was useful considering I have had a mishap with it by not ensuring it was recording when recording for a past assignment.
I haven’t yet seen the final piece for the band session however from viewing it from the gallery I am sure that it would be acceptable and would be considered a fine piece of work. Once the footage is up for viewing I will evaluate it, consider the shots from both the experienced student and the new students.  I will take into account the lighting, debating if it was acceptable for the band itself.

Live performances analysis

What I would do

Jim Noir playing My Patch live at London Water Rats Apr 08

·         Very mellow song, medium paced, main focus on vocalist, minor drums segments to notice.
o   Start with establishing shot.
o   Mixture of shots on each artist.
o   Drum camera required.
o   To keep excitement, repeated cuts & fades between vocalist and drummer.
o    Light and bright colors to fit song e.g. purple, pink or light blue.

Jim Noir Eanie Meany live

·         Loud and upbeat, 2 vocalists, more drum.
o   Drum camera.
o   Try to get good two shot.
o   Last two shots fade from vocalist doing guitar segment to a two shot of both singers.
o   Lighting should be a mixture of red and blue or purple and blue.
