Wednesday 10th October 2012

                Today’s session was brilliant, we cracked straight into work and almost had no outside interference distracting us. We had completed arranging all the footage into the sequence. I started my day by first giving myself some goals for the day;

Aims

  • ·         Get more involved in edit suite
  • ·         Complete first doc
  • ·         Start 2nd at least 30 seconds.

Once we began we decided to find the best set of reactions from the students and tutors which were actually a difficult task considering that most people would mention the bad whether and how it has made them be against coming back to Dolphinholme. We only wanted positive answers because our documentary was supposed to put across the message of how great the experience was and how it benefited everyone by going. The three best ones we had was of Ryan Baron (media student), Shamus Khan (3D student) & James Gilbraith aka Boo (learning support tutor). There were others that we wanted to use but some had problems with them for example Richard interview (art tutor) was a great interview but the boom mic was in shot for the majority of the interview. It was a shame we didn’t get better ones because we wanted to show a range of sex and student professions enjoying themselves in the documentary. We edited in Shamus’s interview, had to cut some bits out so that it only had the relevant stuff included and we also adjusted the audio to a point that would be deemed professional.  I went for a quick break and when I got back I was told that the computer had crashed and we hadn’t saved the Shamus footage so we had to redo that once the technician had fixed the MAC for us. This has taught us to always save every ten minutes or anytime we add many pieces of footage.

Also with Ryan’s interview there is a segment where he says the words “it was immense” and I got the idea to have that as the last thing you would hear, so we kept that as the ending for a while. We attempted to edit by adding some effects, we were trying to make it have a kind of booming echo effect but nothing worked. Whilst editing Richard says that this should be annual thing for the college, which the team thought would be better to use as the ending as it didn’t need much editing and adds more of an impact on the audience, it’s like a hint to the tutors and people who allow us to have trips to let us go again.

      Half way through the session we decided we would move the group photo of everyone at Dolphinholme from the second shot to the last shot of the sequence, it looked more like a professional documentary by having it at the end. We fade it in after Richard says “it should be an annual thing for Blackburn College” and we added a title to it thanking everyone involved. It demonstrated how everyone actually enjoyed their time there and adds more of effect to what Richard has just said.
We worked as a great team and got it finished moderately quickly, however we were unable to get the soundtrack seeing as we had to buy it off the internet and we didn’t want to use our bank details on the college computer, so we decided that we would try to get them at home. The final footage time was one minute and forty three seconds long. During the day Jamie saw some of our footage and said the font was all wrong so we decided to change that.

The font we changed it to look more professional and fit well with the documentary. Seeing as we couldn’t get the soundtrack and we couldn’t get hold of Jamie we decided to stop and finish off in the morning.
Here is what it looked like at the end of the day.

Today I succeed two out three of my aims, we finished the documentary and got more involved by editing a lot the footage but I also think I took too much control over not allowing Becky and Jordan to get the same amount time on as me. Hopefully we will just have to add the soundtrack tomorrow then will be able to crack on with our second documentary.
