Tuesday 6th November- Working On Our Three Minute Assignment

Today on a slow note, instead of meeting up in the usual room based in the Beacon centre, we had to meet in the lecture theatre based in the Victoria building. On a good day everyone arrives at 9.15 but because we had to move about we had to wait even longer so that everyone would be present for what Jamie had to say.
Jamie commenced by giving targets which we have to work on completing in the next few weeks.
Re-written from notepad
Targets

  • ·         Drawing Qualification
  • ·         Personal Statements
  • ·         UCAS choices
  • ·         Blogs
  • ·         Personal direction leading to part 2
  • ·         Visiting lecture series
  • ·         Work experience

He then went on to mentioning that there is a UCAS fair on the 27th , which I really want to go to. I went last year and found it a big help on influencing me on which university to choose from but I want to go again just to remind myself what’s on offer. Jamie went on to say that when thinking of universities, always ask yourself two things:
·         What do I want, areas of expertise
·         Where CAN I live
He said we really should think about the location because that’s what will influence us in staying or leaving a university. Jamie then handed out a couple of sheets which told us what’s on offer over the next couple of weeks.

We finished off watching a video that Aaron had recently finished making, it was a short documentary of Cape Town and it was amazing in my opinion. It was really helpful to me as well seeing as I am going to Tanzania in February and watching someone’s work similar to what I will produce was helpful.
Now I was really focused on moving forward with the three minute assignment as I am working around the area that I think benefits me most. I thoroughly enjoy writing and creating drama’s, so over the weekend I had wrote up some ideas which to pitch to my partner, Lewis. I was aware Lewis was doing another assignment, recording a freak show and didn’t have time to work on thinking of many feasible ideas for our assignment. Unfortunately Lewis had to go and review other footage he had gathered from the freak show so I only had a little amount of time to pitch everything to him.

My ideas
Idea 1
A man has lost his girlfriend/wife and is left alone to look after their child. He is no help to the child as his depression is getting the better of him. He has a watch that has been with him throughout his life; it has been broken due to an incident with his wife. Whilst his child is crying his watch suddenly stars rewinding and travels him back in time to before he lost her. Once he realises what is happening he uses his new power to travel back and save his girlfriend from dying but every time he goes back something bad happens.

Travel & incidents.

  • ·         The week before she died, when they were last happy- notices he has this gift.
  • ·         On their first date and breaks up with her- causes them to not have their child
  • ·         Him dying instead of the wife- causes the women to go into deep depression
  • ·         When she is in labour leaves them both- causes her to hate husband but she is happy with kid.
Two pieces of film inspired this idea, clip are below.

What I like about this idea the most is that it can gain a lot of depth with a range of different types of drama.  Like death, lost hope, desperation etc. And I love the idea of the butterfly effect- how one thing no matter how small can change everything.

 Idea 2

Do a music video. I have worked on creating a music video before and I was really impressed with the standard of the final product. Here is what I made last time.

Idea 3
I know this sounds daft but this idea is based on around a pen, I want to make the pen be a symbol on the occupier of the pen. I got the idea from this clip.

Process

  • ·         Pen enjoying itself, being used a lot, very happy. Occupier fairly young.
  • ·         Pen starting to get less ink, get shaken about. Occupier slightly older
  • ·         Pen stops working, get ignored for some time. Occupier much older
  • ·         Pen is old and dusty. Out of ink, considered useless. Another person, different sex to notice, tries using the pen and throws it away.
  • ·         Pen on the floor broken.
To make this more enjoyable and basically of good quality, the camera work and soundtrack is key.

Idea 4
About a father that is a drinker. And he basically just gets drunk. He bullies his child, just picks on him for the sake of it but he thinks he does it for a good reason, as if it is making him a stronger man. This is mainly going to be thoughts aloud from the father character and it is the dialogue and camera work that will make an impact on the audience. The main purpose for this project is for me to improve my camera skills, technique and all.

Idea 5
The narrative to this one is about a young teenager (preferably female) has a tough life; her mother is bedridden and suffers from some illness and is also bullied at school. We start off seeing this teenager sitting with her mum; she goes into the bathroom where another person enters. The audience is meant to believe this is another person like a friend or family member but it is really the teens alter ego, she is so depressed and alone that she needs this person to keep them going but the problem is this alter ego only likes to cause trouble makes situations worse and teases her. On the way to school the teen gets attacked and this is when we realised that the alter ego is an alter ego because after being attacked the alter ego hits the bully but then it reveals that it was the teen all along. I got this idea from a project I did at secondary school which was honestly very poor, in story and acting so I want to have another go at it.

Idea 6
In my spare time I have attempted to write up my own scripts for both film and television dramas. My idea is to create an intro for one of my ideas, like there is already a story been developed. The drama is based on three young friends trying to make money but the best way is by crime seeing as they live in a rough area. Each character is unique in their own way but it is more based on one of the characters.

Idea 7
This idea is another one of mine that I have written; the only problem is that the original script was meant to be roughly 10 minutes long, so trying to condense this would be very difficult.
The story was about a teenage boy who loves with his sister, mum and bullying step-father. The boy gets in trouble and has a fight with his stepfather but because the mother is so scared of the stepdad that she throws out the teenage boy. Whilst he is leaving he takes his sister because he is worried that the stepdad is going to start hurting her, they sleep rough that night and in the morning the boy drops his sister off at his friend’s house and then goes to get high. The friend is aware of the situation and knows how bad the stepdad is but doesn’t want to get involved so they ring the police; the boy arrives back at the house just as the police pick up the sister. He is so broken up that he curls up into a ball and weeps.
This is only a rough explanation of that idea. I have already written up a script for this but as I have noted previously I will have to condense it so it fits with requirements of the brief.

Idea 8
The story includes a three way crossover. Three people on the same day are having the worst time of their lives and they end up crossing over, the story is all about redemption, how there is always light in darkness.

  • ·         Girl- has lost someone and is now all alone and isolated, want to die.
  • ·         Driver- having serious trouble with wife leads him to drink drive.
  • ·         Bully- breaks into a house and accidently hurts someone possibly kill them, can’t live with himself.
It is mainly going to be dialogue from the girl. Her opinions and thoughts of how she is feeling and how the other two feel similar. She goes on to say how peoples bad choices can be rectified no matter what, it’s in that one moment that changes everything.

Lewis didn’t go into much detail but he thinks the final idea could be best to do, it may be the most difficult to achieve but could be really good. We will have to work in a lot of depth of the narrative in more detail. Seeing as Lewis had to spend the rest of the day looking over the footage I went off to think of how to improve the idea. During this time Aaron Dunleavy offered me a role in his three minute assignment. We have worked together before and know how to communicate well so I have no problem working with him. He chooses me to be his writer and co-producer as I enjoy those roles most. He also had two people I hadn’t worked with before which is good, it allows me to get my own opinion of their work ethic, gives me an idea if I want to work with them in the future. Aaron had a rough starting point for his project but he wants me to go a try give it a better narrative.

Aaron initial idea

  • Old woman - wealthy but lonely.
  • She wants to do something meaningful before she passes.
  • She writes her telephone number on a £5 note.
  • Spends the note in hope of someone contacting her.
  • We see the £5 passing through people's hands.

I will try to work on this tonight but i dont have much hope considering it is short notice.
